Arthritis Awareness Month: Understanding Symptoms and Treatments
What is arthritis?
Arthritis is an umbrella term for conditions that attack the joints in your body. This inflammation damages your joints over time, leading to limited mobility if untreated. There are many types of arthritis, with some of the most common being osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout. Each type has a different cause, frequently we see this develop from:
- Wear + tear on the joints over time.
- Autoimmune disorders like RA.
- Injuries + untreated infections of the joint.
- Family genetics.
What does arthritis feel like?
Everyone's pain levels are unique, but common descriptions of arthritis include worsening pain when active, stiffness, joint popping, and excessive swelling. Here are a few signs to look for:
- Joint Pain: Persistent pain, especially in the morning or after prolonged periods of inactivity.
- Swelling + Inflammation: Look for redness, warmth, or swelling around the joints, particularly in the feet.
- Stiffness: Noticeable stiffness in the joints, especially after sitting or lying down for a while.
If you're experiencing ongoing pain, stiffness, and swelling - don't wait for it to get worse. Contact your doctor for testing to get a proper diagnosis and begin your path to recovery.
