Musculoskeletal conditions, whether acute or chronic, often cause nagging aches and pains that create a new pain in a different area. For instance, if you’re dealing with a foot injury, you may experience pain in your knees, hips and back in addition to your foot.

Success Story

Recently we had an active patient that had an immediate onset of pain after simply walking in a grocery store. She also had an upcoming trip to Florida planned with her college roommates. On her first visit, she immediately looked and felt defeated about the whole situation.

She said they had gone to the beach as a group for the past 30 years. One of the highlights of her trip was walking alongside her longtime friends catching up on the year’s events. Some of her friends had passed throughout the years; and it was getting more challenging for them to take these coveted trips together.

After an in-office digital X-ray, we discovered a stress fracture in her 3rd metatarsal (top + middle of her foot). You could see it on her face, she was trying to hold It together and remain strong. However, her emotions got the best of her, and she started crying. She had 5 weeks till her Florida trip. We created an aggressive treatment plan including wearing an immobilizing boot, compression, rest, ice, and applying a topical CBD pain-relieving stick , called SOOTHE from modernpodiatrist.com.

She was very compliant in staying off her feet during the next 3 weeks. She underwent laser therapy 3 times a week, for 3 weeks. During her follow-up visit with our provider she was extremely happy (yet cautious) about her progress. Her pain had reduced during that time from a 9 to a 2. We took an updated X-ray and low and beyond, the fracture line was barely visible! In 3 weeks she had created enough boney callus (how we heal) around the fracture site!

She remained off of her feet for 2 more weeks. We had our final visit the day before her trip to Florida. She no longer had any pain, and her fracture was healed. She was released to walk (with a supportive tennis shoe) on the sand. She was ecstatic, and so were we! We followed up with her after her vacation and were pleasantly surprised that she hadn’t had any pain despite walking barefoot on the beach (against doctors’ orders, of course!). Keep in mind, normally it takes 2 months to heal a fracture!

Should I see a doctor at Lexington Podiatry first?

Pain is a fickle beast. While it is not required, if we’re treating a highly complex condition, it is best to have a provider’s evaluation first. Especially to make sure you are an appropriate candidate for laser therapy. At this visit, they will fully evaluate your painful condition and create a custom treatment plan. This will best guide you through a successful laser therapy protocol for those with chronic pain symptoms, giving you the best possible outcome.

Is it FDA cleared?

Yes, it is FDA cleared for treatment of chronic pain. However, MLS therapy has been used by athletes and celebrities for decades. Contrary to popular belief, laser therapy is not just for the elite. Orthopedists have utilized laser therapy for years!

At our modern Podiatry clinic, we have offered laser therapy for pain for the past 15 years. During this time, we have created successful protocols for our patients to allow accelerated healing thus minimized downtime from work and activities.

The FDA clearance is backed up with plenty of scientific evidence proving its effectiveness. This life-saving light source aims to reduce swelling, inflammation, and overall pain from a variety of conditions. Its revolutionary wavelength technology allows practitioners to direct even deeper treatments within our bodies - something other attempted therapies couldn’t do before. By penetrating damaged cells, it stimulates enzyme production while increasing cell repair rate, effectively eradicating scarring or leftover effects after recovery as well as speeding things along surprisingly quickly. So don’t suffer through that broken toe any longer – MLS Laser Therapy has got you covered!

Accelerate Healing

How does laser therapy accelerate healing and reduce my pain?

Laser therapy is a non-invasive, painless treatment that uses energy in two specific wavelengths of light to treat painful and debilitating conditions. The energy from this light stimulates activity in damaged cells and speeds the process in which they can recover.

MLS Laser Therapy treatments have been clinically shown to significantly reduce pain, inflammation, and swelling while it improves local blood circulation and helps to repair injury and increase mobility. Listed below are more specifics on this process.

  1. Increased Blood Flow which promotes faster healing

Laser therapy is an effective way to increase blood flow to your injured areas, allowing them to heal and perform better than ever before. This treatment can also reduce pain due to poor circulation and provide other long-term benefits – all with minimal effort! The laser works by generating low-level light energy that penetrates the skin, stimulating increased blood flow to the affected area. Not only does this promote faster healing, but it also reduces inflammation and increases nerve activity.

Laser therapy is a tried-and-true way to reduce swelling and inflammation in your body – even those areas that are hard to reach. The special wavelengths of light emitted by the laser help trigger vasodilation (widening of the blood vessels) and activate your lymphatic drainage system, which removes excess fluid from the injured area. This process helps to reduce any edema or buildup of fluid and minimizes any bruising or inflammation, leading you back to feeling as good as new!

The special wavelengths of light emitted by the laser help trigger vasodilation (widening of the blood vessels) and activate your lymphatic drainage system, which removes excess fluid from the damaged area. This process helps to reduce any edema or buildup of fluid and minimizes any bruising or inflammation, leading you back to feeling as good as new!

  2. Reduction of swelling and inflammation, decreasing your pain

Maintaining healthy circulation is essential for keeping your body in tip-top shape, and it’s especially important if you're looking to reduce swelling and inflammation. That's where MLS laser therapy comes into play. This type of laser therapy helps to reduce swelling by using specific light frequencies that penetrate deep into the tissues, thus boosting blood flow and helping to break up any excess fluid buildup in the area. In turn, this can help to reduce inflammation and pain associated with pain from injuries or simply wear and tear on your body! Plus, it's fast – so you'll be feeling better before you know it

  3. Pain relief (~75% in 2 weeks with acute injuries)

MLS laser therapy is a great way to help manage pain and improve nerve function. It works by promoting your body's natural healing factors. Not only does it provide relief from pain, but the improvements in tissue health and nerve performance can lead to longer-term pain reduction and improved functioning.

We've all heard about endorphins and enkephalin, the pain-killing chemicals that our bodies naturally produce. But did you know that laser therapy can help kick your body's production of these powerful natural pain relievers into overdrive? Yes, it's true! Through its effect on nerve cells, MLS Laser Therapy helps reduce nerve sensitivity and allows your body to ramp up its production of endorphins and enkephalin. So not only will you benefit from reduced inflammation and swelling when using laser therapy, but you may also find yourself enjoying an extra boost of those feel-good hormones too!

Warning, Nerd Alert:

Next on the list is power density, or how much energy we're delivering in a specific area. This is measured in watts per square centimeter and helps us control the intensity of the laser's effect. It can be adjusted depending on the size of the area you're treating, or even just to make sure you don't overdo it!

Finally, there are pulses—or bursts of energy emitted at regular intervals. The number of pulses and their frequency (measured in Hertz) can also be changed up to achieve different results. So by tweaking these four variables—energy, impulse duration, power density and pulses—you have complete control over your laser treatments!

But, best of all, you won't feel a thing during the procedure –It could be the key to finding lasting relief from your acute or chronic pain.

By using a MLS IV laser over the injured area (or nerve) site, we’re able flip your body’s switch to promote an immense amount of blood flow. This rush of blood circulation (which carries your natural anti-inflammatory fighters) is directed to the damaged nerve. By promoting your natural healing factors to the area, you have expedited healing and you’re able to get back to living your life, quicker!

It’s quick (~10 minutes) and painless (not only is it painless, but it also actually feels good to get circulation to the damaged area.

I’ve tried laser therapy before and it didn’t work, how is this different?

Much like cars, all lasers aren’t built the same. We have selected, tested, and measured only the most effective lasers over the past 15 years.

During this time, we’ve been able to have hands-on experience and listen to our patient’s feedback. We’ve tested and measured success rates of other alternative lasers and therapy protocols.

After conducting research for over 15 years, and measuring success rates with our patients, we can confidently recommend our lasers and treatment plans (to the right candidate). In fact, they’re currently treating our Lexington Podiatry patients, we’re just now offering it to non-patients.

How Does it speed up my recovery time?

The good news is that not only does laser therapy reduce the pain at your injury site, it also helps to speed up recovery time! Laser light can penetrate deep into your skin tissue and kick-start your cells' natural healing abilities. The increased energy provided by the laser will mobilize more nutrients and quickly get rid of waste from the injured area. It also improves blood flow, which gives rise to new capillaries in damaged tissue. In short, laser therapy is like sending an express delivery of healing power straight to your injury - reducing pain and helping you recover faster!

Does it really work?

MLS laser therapy is a powerful tool in the treatment of chronic and acute foot and ankle pain. Our patients have experienced ~75% pain reduction in ~2 weeks with 6 laser treatments in acute conditions. Chronic pain sufferers need ~9 treatments to gauge efficacy to best determine how their body is going to respond to laser therapy, generally they have at least 60% relief in 3 weeks.

All our patients have some level of improvement.Chronic pain can be challenging to predict, however we’re confident that you will have (at minimum), some type of pain relief. None of our patients over 15 years have ever had a negative reaction (increase in pain).

Using light energy to reduce inflammation, our team of experts uses this technology to help promote healing and reduce swelling. In addition to providing relief from pain, this laser therapy also helps improve blood circulation which further aids in the recovery process. Our specialists are dedicated to finding the best solution for each individual patient so they can get back on their feet as soon as possible.

Clinical Research Proving Laser Therapy Is Effective

Laser Therapy

How can MLS Laser Therapy Help My Pain?

By using a MLS IV laser over the injured area (or nerve) site, we’re able flip your body’s switch to promote an immense amount of blood flow. This rush of blood circulation (which carries your natural anti-inflammatory fighters) is directed to the injured joint, inflamed or torn tendon, damaged nerve and/or broken bone.

The reason most people take a very long time to heal (sometimes never) is because these areas are notorious for lack of circulation. Blood flow is how we heal! Muscle has lots of healing opportunities, but the tendons, ligaments, fascia-type structures do not. By promoting your natural healing factors to the area, you have expedited healing and you’re able to get back to living your life…quicker!

MLS Laser Therapy treatments have been clinically shown to significantly reduce pain, inflammation, and swelling while it improves local blood circulation and helps to repair injury and increase mobility.

How do I know if it’s really working?

After the first visit, most patients don’t experience a drastic drop in pain after just one visit. After the first week, you should feel your pain melting away. This continues as more laser visits are completed. Most patients experience a drop in pain by ~75% in 2 weeks with 6 treatments. During the session you will feel a warming sensation which is quite pleasant. It is completely pain-free. Sit back and relax as the gentle flow of circulation courses to your injured area knowing healing is occurring beneath the surface.

Post-surgical patients: How does laser therapy speed up my recovery after surgery?

MLS Laser Therapy is the perfect solution if you're looking to get back to action faster after surgery. It helps speed up your body's healing process, reducing downtime, and allowing you to return to your normal activities sooner. Plus, MLS laser therapy can reduce scar formation from surgeries for bunions, hammertoe, ankle surgery or other conditions - so you don't have to worry about any visible reminders of that pesky bunion.

With its powerful combination of shorter healing times and reduced scarring, there’s no better way than MLS Laser Therapy to get back into life quickly after surgery. Its non-invasive treatment accelerates your body’s natural healing process, so you can get back to doing the things that you love - without having to worry about a lengthy recovery. Of note: you must have a doctor’s clearance prior to your laser appointment. Please download this form and bring it to your first laser appointment.

I have recently had hardware (metal screws or plates) in my feet and ankles, is it safe?

YES! MLS IV is a cold laser, there is no concern for heating up the metal and causing a painful reaction.

Will my pain return?

This is directly dependent upon the root of your pain. If it is chronic in nature and stemming from a systemic issue, this must be addressed for long-term relief. But this is entirely dependent on you. We perform all extensive and necessary testing to best diagnose where the source of your pain is coming from. We also work with your family doctor (or specialist if you prefer) to collaborate and build a team around you during your treatment. Our recommendation is to work with your provider to address the causative factors to prevent re-occurrence. However, if you’ve already exhausted treatment options, then you’ll need maintenance treatments which are based on your individual condition.

Are there any side effects of laser therapy?

There are no risks or side effects with the MLS laser. No need to worry about an infection after a surgical procedure or taking harsh oral medication. You get pain-relief and healing without the consequences of risks.

Why should I choose laser therapy over an oral prescription from my doctor?

Laser therapy is SAFE for you!

What to expect during your visit

Wear comfortable clothing as it may be easily moved to direct the laser wand more effectively over the injured area. Pulsing the laser or using selected wavelengths helps minimize heat on the skin, which reduces the risk of side effects. One session of laser therapy typically lasts ~10 minutes, based on the number of areas treated. The treatment is almost always painless, though you may feel warmth or tingling during the treatment. Typically, the warmth feels good to injured areas!

MLS Laser Therapy is a great solution for those looking to enjoy the benefits of treatment without feeling any pain. Most patients don't experience anything more than warmth in the treated area, so you can rest easy knowing there won't be any unpleasant sensations during your appointment. After the MLS Laser Therapy is complete no bandaging or further treatments are necessary; all that's left to do is enjoy the cumulative results of your session! So, relax and let us take care of you – we'll monitor your progress throughout your treatment cycle and make sure everything goes as smoothly as possible. It may not happen overnight, but we're confident you'll see impressive results shortly.

Who is NOT a candidate?

  • Patients with active cancer.
  • Those who are pregnant.
  • Those who have a dark pigmented lesion underneath the nail (this requires a doctor visit first for proper evaluation).
  • Patients who have a severe infection around treatment.

Who must see a provider before laser therapy can be started?

Those who have a dark pigmented lesion underneath the nail.

Those diagnosed with diabetes, peripheral neuropathy, peripheral vascular disease, or arterial disease, post-surgical patients.

The above underlying conditions require a pre-screen to take additional precautions to ensure the best possible outcome. (You may use your insurance for any doctor visit)

Post-surgical patients need an order from your doctor.

Is this covered by my insurance?

While the MLS Therapy Laser is FDA-cleared, treatments aren’t covered by insurance. If you have FSA, Health Savings Accounts (FSA) or a Medical IRA the cost can be covered. We do encourage you to coordinate directly with your insurance company for approval prior to your appointment. This will allow our Patient Experience Team to potentially get prior approval and allow your visit to go seamlessly. With rising appointment fees and out of pocket co-pays, the cost of the laser therapy treatments is less costly than other, more invasive treatments that are “covered” by insurance.

Is it safe while you are nursing?

YES!
