Gait and balance issues can happen at many ages with many diagnoses. We do mostly see this in our elderly population. Gait refers to the way a patient walks and balance is how well a patient maintains their center of gravity. Abnormalities in either of these areas can lead to falls. Gait and balance rely on complex processes in the body between the nervous system and the musculoskeletal system. Disease processes that effect the nervous or musculoskeletal system can also lead to gait/balance problems. Treatments for gait and balance issues are really helpful for both the patient and caregivers. From stretching to physical therapy, conservative approaches to this problem are very successful. We also make and maintain braces, orthotics, and splinting for the patient to assist with deficits.
