Gait and balance issues can happen at many ages with many diagnoses. We do mostly see this in our elderly population. Gait refers to the way a patient walks and balance is how well a patient maintains their center of gravity. Abnormalities in either of these areas can lead to falls. Gait and balance rely on complex processes in the body between the nervous system and the musculoskeletal system. Disease processes that effect the nervous or musculoskeletal system can also lead to gait/balance problems. Treatments for gait and balance issues are really helpful for both the patient and caregivers.

At Lexington Podiatry we sit down and really try to get to the bottom of why you're having balance issues.  We also perform a very simple test to look at how the nerves are functioning.  This test is performed in under 5 minutes.  We realize your confidence is dwindling even trying to do the most simple tasks like going to the grocery store.

We will fit you with "balance braces".  These lightweight ankle braces will easily go into most shoes and give you back the confidence you deserve. Consider them like a bra, when you need the extra support, you wear them.  If you're lounging around the house, no need.  However, when you do where them you'll be able to participate in the activities you want to do, instead of being on the sidelines.

Next, we evaluate your range of motion.  A huge contributing factor to falling is reduced joint range of motion.  A significant portion of improving your range of motion can be accomplished at home with the proper tools.  We will give you everything you need to improve your range of motion.  It's amazing what you can accomplish at home with minimal effort.

Please call and schedule an appointment with Dr. Freels, this is one of her specialties. Her goal is to prevent you from needing a cane, a walker and even a wheelchair.  We have been known to improve the quality of like in patients who no longer need any assistive devices.
