At Lexington Podiatry, we see A LOT of bunions. So, so, so many bunions!

We have seen them all, and fielded all kinds of questions. However, we have noticed that patients are always curious about 3 major things, so we thought we’d share the answers with you, straight from Dr. Barko!

Top Three Bunion Questions We Get

#1 Will orthotics fix my bunion?

Orthotics are meant for prevention of progression of your bunion, so we highly recommend them and always try our patients in custom orthotics before doing any kind of invasive procedures.

#2 What shoes can I even wear with orthotics for my bunion?

Whether it’s custom orthotics, NSAIDS, injections, padding or spacers you need, we have a full list of comfortable and stylish shoes that will accommodate your insert and bunion. We want you to feel (and look) good while taking care of your feet throughout your busy day.

#3 I do not want surgery—are there no other options?

Surgery being the only option is so untrue. I am so glad when the patient comes in with surgery as their only expectation, because I can surprise them with so many other treatment options! Our approach is always conservative-first. We have options stemming from gel sleeves all the way up to custom orthotics for your dress shoes. We want you to be comfortable, and your feet to feel good all day, and believe that trying more conservative methods first is the best start to get you there.

The Two Things That Surprise Most Bunion Patients

#1 Bunions are hereditary.

Most patients think either they did something to cause their bunion, or it came with age. These are so untrue! Bunions are hereditary. Mother, father, grandparents, siblings, can all have a bunion before you. Unsupportive shoes or 40-hour work weeks on concrete can certainly accelerate the process, but bunions are one of those family “gifts” that keep on giving, generation after generation. (Thanks a lot, mom!)

#2 We perform minimally-invasive surgeries in office.

Dr. Amy Barko is one of the few podiatrists nationwide who is trained to do minimally invasive bunion repairs. Although this is still surgery, there is a minimal incision and minimal-to-no downtime. And it is far less painful or disruptive than the old bunion surgery methods. Patients have been so happy finding out about all of the options we have here at Lexington Podiatry.

If you have a bunion and you would like to have it evaluated, please call (or text) our office, or schedule an appointment online!
