Oh, Kim.

Fashion is your blessing AND your curse.

Although the famed Kardashian sister is stunning in her white caplet shift dress, her feet are detracting from the overall appearance of ethereal pregnancy glow. Those swollen feet just look painful!

There seems to be a lot of controversy around women backing the ‘rights’ of pregnant women to wear stilettos these days. Many are all about sporting the towering heels and say it’s not an issue. Others say that the high heels are just an extra danger that’s not needed.

I’m an equal opportunity naysayer. I tell ALL my patients (not just those with a baby bump) that if you’re willing to wear the high, high heels – you’re also accepting the possible dangers that go with that risk.

Sometimes accidents just HAPPEN no matter how careful you personally are. Someone may trip and bump into you on the street and throw your balance completely off.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve seen enough broken ankles in my day…I’d never wish one on a pregnant mother-to-be or new mommy. I want you all to be safe, but I guess that’s my maternal instincts shining through! I feel very protective of all my patients.

SWOLLEN FEET

Soon-to-be-moms shouldn’t be shocked by swollen feet (especially in the warmer months), but there are some things that you can do to alleviate the discomfort associated with them. Note that you should alert a physician if your face or hands swell suddenly or if one leg or thigh seems to swell and becomes tender. These can be danger signs for preeclampsia or a blood clot.

Edema (swollen feet) can be eased by:

  • Wearing proper footwear! Allow room for those feet to swell naturally as the day go on. Most feet will swell a bit towards the end of the day – pregnant or not.
  • Maintain a healthy diet – a high sodium intake will exacerbate edema.
  • Take a load off and kick your feet up. Prop them up on pillows on the coffee table – the one you never let ANYONE put their feet on – because you’re worth it!
  • Drink water…and lots of it! Pretend that baby bump is a camel hump and hydrate before you go out and about.
  • We’re all familiar with Spanx…well, support hose are like Spanx for your whole lower body! Here’s a tip – squeeze into them BEFORE you get out of bed in the morning. Blood tends to pool around the feet after you get up.
