Plantar plate tear is the tear of the soft tissue structure on the bottom of the toe joint. This area can have an acute tear from injury or a gradual tear over time from foot position. It might be that the patient has a digit that is pulling out of place or the pain could be in the ball of the foot. Swelling and redness can occur. Pain is usually worse with "toe off" during walking. Conservative care includes rest, medication and strapping. If conservative care fails an MRI would be ordered and possible surgery would be an option.
