Synovitis is inflammation of the lining inside the joint capsule. This could happen to any joint but is commonly seen in ankles and subtalar joints.
The most common cause of synovitis is overuse of the joint. This could be in athletes or people with physically demanding jobs who have repetitive movements.
At Lexington Podiatry we strive to find the root of the problem and get you out of pain.
Synovitis is a medical condition characterized by the inflammation of the synovial membrane, which is the delicate lining found within the joint capsule.
This membrane plays a crucial role in joint health by producing synovial fluid, a viscous substance that lubricates the joints, reducing friction and facilitating smooth movement.
While synovitis can potentially affect any joint in the body, it is particularly prevalent in the ankles and subtalar joints. The subtalar joint, located just below the ankle joint, is essential for the complex motions of the foot, including inversion and eversion, making it susceptible to various forms of stress and injury.
Causes
There are several factors that can lead to the onset of synovitis, with the most common cause being overuse of the joint.
This condition is frequently observed in athletes who engage in high-impact sports, such as running, basketball, or soccer, where repetitive stress is placed on the joints. Additionally, individuals with physically demanding occupations, such as construction workers or dancers, may also experience synovitis due to the continuous strain and repetitive movements associated with their work.
Over time, this excessive use can lead to micro-trauma in the joint, triggering an inflammatory response that causes pain, swelling, and stiffness.
Diagnosing
At Lexington Podiatry, we are dedicated to thoroughly assessing each patient's condition to identify the underlying causes of their joint discomfort.
We start with a comprehensive foot & ankle evaluation, imaging of the area, and a detailed review of the patient's activity levels and lifestyle.
Symptoms
Symptoms of synovitis may include:
localized pain
tenderness around the affected joint
swelling
reduced range of motion.
In some cases, individuals may also experience warmth or redness in the area, indicating an active inflammation. It is important to address these symptoms early on to prevent further joint damage and to maintain overall mobility.
Treatment
We aim to develop a personalized treatment plan that not only alleviates pain but also addresses the root of the problem, allowing patients to regain their functionality and return to their daily activities without discomfort. Treatment may include:
Custom orthotics to offload the joint
Corticosteroid Injections for rapid relief
Regenerative therapies
Physical therapy
